German player Dushant Kumar has spoken to cricket.de ahead of next week’s five nation U19 tournament in Belgium. The 18-year-old from Hamburg club HSV, has said that he sees archrivals France as the biggest challenge in the four day tournament.
„We always seem to lose by a small margin against them,“ he said. „This time we have to stay cool and bat through all the allotted overs.“
Last year in the equivalent tournament, Germany was able to come third, after two wins and two losses. This time round, Kumar hopes the team will be more consistent.
„We are one of the strongest teams there, and we are good in the field,“ he said. „But the batsmen need to take responsibility to score the runs. Everyone has to think that they are going to have to score the winning runs.“
One player, many teams
For those that don’t know him, Kumar has been a fixture in Germany’s underage sides for years. He was also recently invited to the mens‘ national team training camp in Husum, after impressing selectors in this year’s Wintech DCB Super Series competition. This season, Kumar was playing for the Northern Lights team representing northern Germany and the eastern region.
„It’s been exciting to be part of that team, and to get to know the players,“ Kumar told cricket.de.
„There have been a lot of things that I have been able to get out of the experience, things that I have learned to help my own cricket.“
For the moment though, Kumar is splitting his focus between cricket and his studies. The allrounder is keen to go to university, but also has his eyes on something else too.
„My goal is definitely to get into the men’s national team in the long run,“ he said. „That’s definitely where I want to be.“
